Conversation 005: Crossover Games and Our Top 10 Special Guest Appearances

Damn right we have episode five for you!

It came a little later in the month than anticipated, but hey… everyone’s got busy lives going on right now. Thankfully we were all able to get together and record a great episode, including our buddy Bryce, who’s back once again to shoot the shiz with us.

This time around we had a nice long discussion about all the games we’ve been playing (especially Andrew, who seems to have become a different man). Phones, handhelds, last-gen, current-gen, PCs… we have it all covered. We moved into our discussion about crossover games, and specifically why and how they are created. Is it a simple money-making machine? Is it beneficial to all parties involved? Do they get better over time? We finished up with a very fitting Top 10 list: the Top 10 Special Guest Appearances. Not specifically from crossover games, these characters took a special role in the games they did a guest stint in, and they are all memorable in their own ways.

We’ll hit you back again soon with some regular blog entries. In the meantime, enjoy the show, and let us know what you think about everything! We have big plans for the site (including blog entries, podcasts, design, community, etc.), and we’re thrilled to have you along for the ride.

You mentioned wishing you were there for the unvailing of Solid Snake in Brawl, so I figured I’d post a link to a youtube video of the trailer with the audience’s audio overlayed. The trailer was shown to the press only though, so the reaction wasn’t as huge as say the Twilight Princess trailer.

And just because I mentioned it I’ll throw in the first TP trailer with audience reaction.

Dude…It is possible to get Arceus (and Shaymin and Darkrai), the last Pokemon. I’ve got him legitimately and Darkrai, but I don’t have Shaymin. I should look into that.

Here is a video from Marriland, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcHrs4MXuzQ

And yet, right in the information for said YouTube video (which I’ve of course seen before), it clearly states:

Q: WHERE DO I GET ARCEUS?
A: You cannot currently get Arceus in D/P without the use of cheating (Action Replay) or hacking (Pokesav), or trading with someone that has done so.

Far from “legitimate” to me :P.

AHA! Darkrai is #491, and I only said I had 491 :P. And I’m off of the habit also, being weaned off of it by a re-addiction to World of Warcraft and a ton of other games.

Semantics aside, great show. Thanks for the reassurance that EarthBound is amazing. Keep it up!

PS: All the talk of 2D fighters makes me ask this question: Am I the only person who just CANNOT beat the last boss of King of Fighters 11?

D’oh! You totally got me. Though I have to say, you’ve just destroyed yourself by saying you’ve dropped it for WoW. At least I can’t say I’ve dropped it for anything equally-grind-centric :P.

If you watch the video, he says he has a source from Japan who gave him the event item.
If you really wanna get him in an American release, just wait for it. I’m sure they’ll do an event for him. Hey, that’s how I got my Suicune for free.

P.S. Marvel vs Capcom: Clash of Super Warriors is my favorite cross over. 🙂
    Captain Commando forever!

I’ve been under the impression that Arceus isn’t even legitimately available in Japan. Checking out the Bulbapedia page [ http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Arceus ], it’s pretty solid. You may be able to legitimately “catch” Arceus, but I don’t see it being possible to legitimately get the necessary Event Item in order to do so.

Not to totally turn this respond thread into Pokemon talk… 😛

    @ mike

The item is called…Azure Flute. A man with a green hat in any pokemart will it to you (after you’ve done the whole mystery gift thing). I cheated for Arceus, I’m not gonna lie. I will respect anyone who wants to do everything legitimately, but I don’t care either way. I’ve caught 96% (not an estimation) of my pokemon legitimately. Once Arceus is release in North America, I will do what is in my power to obtain him, as I did with Darkrai.

I was getting worried that Solid Snake wouldn’t get talked about, but then the top 10 list came!

I don’t have much experience with the 2-D cross-overs so I was really interested in what the VG-Convos crew had to say. One of my personal favorite crossover games was Diddy Kong Racing…which made it even more sad when the DS version excluded the cross-over characters.

I also though Mario Hoops for the DS was a really bizarre cross-over with Mario and Final Fantasy. Sorry, just remembered it.

I feel like Snake was a much bigger deal than Sonic in Brawl simply because SEGA ruined the shock with the Olympics game. Even before then people just had it in their heads that he would be in the game since Sega wasn’t really their own thing anymore. Snake on the other hand wasn’t even out of left field, he came from a whole different ball park! When I heard Sonic was in Brawl my reaction was very pleased, but not at all surprised. When Snake was revealed though I think I could have done back flips right there and then.

As for what I’d love to see for a cross over. Either, Marvel vs Nintendo or an RPG along the lines of X-Men Legends/Marvel: Ultimate Alliance but with Nintendo characters thrown in with the Marvel characters. Of course Marvel vs. Capcom 3 would be really nice as well *crosses fingers*.

Well, if he has 491 Pokémon it’s legit.

The only Pokémon that’s not able to be legitly obtained in any way is Arceus. Number 493.

Bulbasaur to Shaymin are obtainable in some way legitly. Darkrai’s been given out in Japan and America. Shaymin’s been given out in Japan, and pokémon.com, is gonna reveal Shaymin officially, it’s silhouetted right now.

So, who ever e-mailed you could be not lying.

Plus, you could abuse the glitch in the early Japanese copies of Diamond and Pearl to get Darkrai and Shaymin. I’m guilty of doing that, but online I was able to get a legit Movie Darkrai, so it’s all good.

    Hope this helps.

    A game I’d wanna see:

Marvel vs. Capcom vs. DC vs. Jump vs. Mortal Kombat vs. (for the hell of it) SSB

@WJDowling: Banjo and Conker in Diddy Kong Racing weren’t a cross-over yet though. Both Banjo and Conker’s games came out after Diddy Kong Racing. Tiptup also apeared in Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie.

If it was a four player game, I would be sold! I can see it now!
Captain Commando vs. Superman vs. Son-Goku vs. Raiden vs. War-Machine!

Fantastic episode guys, I was actually roaming the wastelands in Fallout while listening, so it was nice to see it covered.

Also, Mike I’m a huge EWJ fan primarily of the games but also the animated series, I have all the VHS releases that were put out, and I’m not ashamed to admit I downloaded the rest in tv-rips, it’s absolutely fucking hilarious.

Doug TenNapel (EWJ’s creator) has recently signed a deal to be on board for a new EWJ game (not the canned psp one) a new animated series, and a film, so it’s an exciting time to be a EWJ fan.

Anyway guys, keep up the good work.
